What Does "Discovering" Mean to Me?

What Does ‘Discovery’ Mean?
What does discovery mean? Discovery means to me to explore the outdoors and get into nature. Discovery also means to me to explore insects and animals. In my picture, I am looking at a butterfly. By looking at the butterfly, I discovered butterflies can be all different colors. That is what discovery means to me.

How can we, as Caine has inspired, demonstrate through teamwork our imagination, determination, and passion for creativity and innovation, with our own arcade constructions?

What Makes an Effective Professional Arcade Game?

I researched the game Block Blaster because I wanted to see what makes a professional arcade game. The creator of the game is Dan Jewett. The object of the game is to break all the blocks with a ball. If you win the game you go to the next level. You have to break about 100 blocks to win the game. The difficulty of the game is a three out of four.

I think to build the game you will probably need a cardboard box, tape, and a little ball. To build the game it might cost around $80. To buy the game it might cost about $85.

The name of the game I played is Block Blaster. The URL of the game is:

Design Brief
What is the Concept Design of my Crusie Arcade Game?

The name of the game is Ocean Maze. You play the game by tilting the box. You could get the ball in the blue circle and win extra tickets! The rules are going to be displayed on the front of the maze. The star rating is 3-stars out of 4 out of 1-4 rating system. You win by making it to the finish line. If you win the game you can get tickets. Then come to Olivia or Ellie and you can get candy.

Yes, we can describe the blueprint briefly, and it is easy. It looks like a little fish in a big ocean with a squid and crazy things coming at the fish.

The materials we need to build our game are cardboard, tape, string, and foam. We think it will take a long time to build this game, but it will be fun! What we think the problem will be is try not to make the walls fall down while they are playing the game.

What were the Results of Testing Our Game?

Praise: Cute game, I really like Ocean Maze.

Question: {No question asked.}

Polish: Shortest route is not necessarily the goal.

Student Comment: Thank you for your comments on Ocean Maze. We are glad you like our game. In designing our game we tried to make it look like an ocean. We also tried to make it fun to play. In our game there are different ways you can go to get to the finish. We do not want you to go through the shortest route because that is not the goal of the game.

Praise: I love the creative obstacles.

Question: [no question asked]

Polish: When you play the first time you should have more seconds.

Student Comment: Thank you, the obstacles in our game are based on sea creatures and other things in the ocean - like whirlpools! Sorry, but you only have one time to play so we try to give as many seconds as possible.

Praise: Ocean Maze was a great idea.

Question: How will you determine final point value for a fast time bonus?

Polish: Make it simpler.

Student Comment: Thank you for your praise. We made it that way; that is why Ocean Maze is great! We had fun building it and playing with it! We will give more tickets for a fast time. That is why we rated it a three out of four star rating. Ocean Maze is still great and fun to play even if our game is hard!

Make It Better
How Can We Make the Crusie Arcade Game Better?
Reflection on Project

What can we do to improve our Arcade Creation?

I can improve Ocean Maze by making more obstacles.

Specifically, how would we do this?

We would do this by putting more string for the whirlpool, or adding some fish.

Reflection on Process

What did you learn to do with the Crusie Arcade Project?

I learned to trust others and work well with them.

What do you know now that you didn’t know before doing the Project? What can you do now that you couldn’t before doing this project?

I can make a cardboard game.

What did you like about the project that helped your learning?

I liked when my partner and I took turns doing different things. It helped because I learned that you do not have to do everything yourself.

What could have been done differently to help your learning?

What could have been done differently was maybe having more time to make our game better.

Having more time to build - that could have been something done differently to help my learning. It would help my learning because we could have more time to read and make Ocean Maze cooler.

A Final Reflection:

To make our game, Ocean Maze, better we could have more obstacles to make the game harder. This would be done by maybe adding some big fish into the game. Through the Crusie Arcade Project, I learned to trust others and work well with them. What I can do now that I could not do before is that I can make a cardboard game. The thing I liked that helped me learn was when my partner and I took turns doing different things. It helped my learning because I learned that you do not have to do everything yourself. Having more time to build - that could have been something done differently to help my learning. It would help my learning because we could have more time to read and make Ocean Maze cooler. That is what I think we could have done to make our game better.
